Shiraoka Kendo Kai

Beginner’s Course

Every 4 months, Shiraoka runs a 6 week long beginner’s course. The purpose of the 6 week course is to take you from having never done kendo before to being able to join in with the rest of the class.

The course runs on our Wednesday session (8pm – 10pm).

You will not be able to wear armour (bogu) once you complete the course, it takes a few months before your kendo is at a sufficient level to wear bogu. You will, however, be able to join in with most of the activities the class engages in and also will be able to attend the Sunday (5pm – 7pm) sessions.

There is no special price to pay for the course however we will ask that you pay for your first 6 weeks in advance (£30). This is to allow us to plan and book any extra floor space we may need.

During the beginners course you will not require any equipment, we will loan you shinai and you can practice in a t-shirt and a pair of tracksuit bottoms or shorts.

You do need to join the British Kendo Association (BKA) both for insurance and the ability to grade and attend BKA events. Temporary membership is only £10 for 3 months and will allow you to train at our dojo, this can then be upgraded to a full membership by paying the difference. Details about joining the BKA and upgrading membership can be found by clicking here.
